Hops Not Just For Beer

We are all familiar with hops, we know it as what is used in beer and gives it the taste we enjoy. What a lot of people don’t know are hops have some amazing health benefits. Hops have been used since ancient times as food and medicine. Hops contain B complex vitamins and also minerals such as iron, zinc, and copper. Hops also have a great effect on the bodies nervous system. Taken at bedtime hops can provide a very rest fun sleep.  Hops also can aide in calming ones nerves. Which makes it a great herb to use for anxiety and excitability. Hops can also help with stomach issues, such as colitis and irritable bowel syndrome. Hops can be taken in herbal pill form or in tincture. Hops should not be taken by people who suffer from depression.  It can also help with skin abrasions, insect bites, and acne. By  mixing the hops with water or carrier oil and applying to the skin. do to its antiseptic properties. An interesting fact is that hops and cannabis are in the same plant family. So enjoy your hops!!

Hops Beer

Boil 75 g hop flowers in 18 litres of water for 1 to 1 ½ hours then remove from heat and stir in 625 g brown sugar until dissolved. Strain in to a plastic bucket that has a lid. When the liquid is lukewarm add one packet of brewer’s yeast or two tablespoons fresh yeast, cover and place in a warm place for two days. Skim the top very well and strain through cheesecloth or muslin in to sterilized bottles. Place corks in the bottles and leave in a cool place for several days after which you can drink the brew.
